Modern working practices and employment status

The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy has responded to Good Work, the report of the review chaired by Matthew Taylor, which was published last year and considered the impact of modern working practices on the world of work.

The Taylor Review found that the strength of the UK’s labour market was built on flexibility but that a clearer focus was needed on quality of work as well as the quantity of jobs. The Government has agreed with the Review that it should be easier for individuals and businesses to determine employment status and has committed to improving clarity and certainty in this area.

The Government issued a consultation on employment status, which considers whether codification of the current case law is necessary, or whether alternative approaches would be more appropriate. It also invites views on how the detail of employment status tests may need to be updated to reflect modern working relationships.

Following that, the Government published the Good Work Plan which sets out its vision for the future of the UK labour market.
