Implications of GDPR for Gift Aid

Keren Caird, Retail Business Development Gift Aid Manager at Sue Ryder Care, has recently given a number of presentations on the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and its implications for charities, particularly in relation to Gift Aid. The presentation slides can be downloaded here.

Despite leaving the EU, the UK will still be adopting the GDPR when it comes into force on 25 May 2018. A number of concerns have been raised about potential areas of conflict between its requirements and those of HMRC for controlling and processing donor and client data. This presentation provides helpful clarity on this point, noting primarily that holding and processing data required by HMRC for Gift Aid purposes will be an appropriate legal basis under the GDPR.
