CTG responds to consultation on museums and galleries tax relief

CTG submitted a response to HM Treasury’s consultation on proposals for tax relief for museums and galleries putting on temporary and touring exhibitions. The proposals aimed to encourage the creation of more and higher quality exhibitions, as well as to support touring of exhibitions across the country and abroad, raising the UK’s profile internationally.

CTG’s response, which can be downloaded here, highlights the importance of making sure that the relief benefits all cultural organisations providing such exhibitions and creates a level playing field. It stresses the need for definitions to be clear to avoid excluding organisations putting on the sorts of exhibitions that the Treasury clear it hopes to include. The response also calls for clarification regarding marketing or advertising activities, which might preclude an exhibition from being eligible for relief.
