Common Errors in Gift Aid claims, which will lead to HMRC rejecting the claim include but are not limited to, the charity records, authorised person and address, are not kept up to date.

The donor details are not valid because:

  • Incomplete names
  • No house name or number on address
  • Inclusion of company donations (check address)
  • Joint donors included on one single line
  • Donor states they are overseas when in the UK so does not provide a postcode

If HMRC reject a charity’s claim or only pay part of the claim, their software is unable to automatically advise the charity of the reason why. In this situation charities should contact the charities helpline to find out what’s wrong.
