Charity Commission publishes revised regulatory statement

At its annual public meeting, the Charity Commission published a revised version of its regulatory statement, setting out how it intends to fulfil its role under the Charities Act 2011 as amended by the Charities (Protection and Social Investment) Act 2016.

The statement focuses on three key areas in particular, which should help promote public trust and confidence in charities and encourage charitable giving and endeavour in all its forms:

  • concentrating on promoting compliance by charity trustees with their legal obligations
  • enhancing the rigour with which it holds charities accountable
  • ensuring that it upholds the definition of charity under charity law

During the meeting, at which CTG was represented, it was also made clear that a consultation on proposals for a regulator registration fee would be opened in the near future.

Prime Minister Theresa May, who gave the keynote speech, also used the opportunity to set out her vision for social care reform, highlighting the important role to be played within it by charities and churches.
