CTG comments on Apprenticeship Levy funding policy

Secretary of State for Education Justine Greening has published a written ministerial statement, setting out the key features of the final funding policy for the Apprenticeship Levy, to come into force from April 2017.

Commenting on proposals, CTG chairman John Hemming said:

“Both the extension of the deadline for using levy funds and the Government’s commitment to working to make it possible for charities to transfer their unused funds to others in the sector are welcome adjustments requested by CTG. We hope that these will contribute to making the Apprenticeship Levy a workable scheme for charities in England. Upskilling the workforce and encouraging young people into work through the promotion of apprenticeships are laudable, but it is crucial that the scheme enables charities to play their part. If funds go unused, the Levy is liable to become simply another employment tax.”

Notes for editors

The Charity Tax Group (CTG) has over 500 members of all sizes representing all types of charitable activity. It was established in 1982 to make representations to Government on charity taxation and it has since become the leading voice for the sector on this issue. CTG has persuaded successive Governments to introduce a range of tax reliefs and has also campaigned successfully to protect existing concessions, saving charities a considerable amount of money in the process.
