EU Withdrawal Bill – Royal Assent

The European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill 2017 has passed through both Houses of Parliament, and is due to receive Royal Assent on 16 March 2017.

The Bill was passed unamended after peers voted not to challenge the Commons again over the issue of whether Parliament should have a veto on the terms of exit. The House of Lords also agreed not to reinsert guarantees over the status of EU residents in the UK into the bill.

On discussions around the rights of EU nationals, the Government indicated that it would aim to get all Member States, the European Commission and the EU Council to explain what the rights of EU citizens were and would be once the UK had left the EU and once an agreement had been reached in negotiations.

The Prime Minister now intends to trigger Article 50 at some point in the week commencing 27 March 2017.
